Map of off road cycling in Taiwan

A circuit through two of the easiest unpaved routes in the area, the tea fields crest and the butterflies crest. It is very suitable to family outings and discovery.

    A butterfly garden

The tea fields crest is a perfect place to try offroad for the first time. There is a large dirt road without difficulty but a real outback atmosphere. The first time I was really surprised to discover these tea fields just a few steps from the industrial areas of 105 and Dinghu. Actually I didn't believe these were really tea fields, and I had to compare with another more notorious tea field to make it sure. After the tea fields, the dirt road crosses a gorgeous forest of evergreens, Philippine acacia and small ferns.

    Along the tea fields

This dirt road is a maintenance road to high voltage pylons, so that it ends at a huge pylon and this is a dead end. On the way back, ride 750m then turn right on another large dirt road. This one goes down gently and offers nice views on the hills around.

If this first hill was too short and easy, then try the second one. It is a similar dirt road but with less forest. If the weather is clear, try to turn left 650m after the beginning of the dirt road. This leads to an excellent view point on the Lalashan range. If you feel fit, ride down to the end of the road which is filled up with wild flowers (better to wear long pants). In the spring the road transforms into a real butterfly garden and this is just wonderful. This section is also a dead end and the ride back is the most difficult part of the tour.

to 1. the tea fields crest : exit 105 at km 17, a small road heading west and then turning south. Leave Hsia Hu St. on your right, then the baseball ground on your left. Just before the roads falls sharply, there is a factory on the right : 大騰國際. The route starts in front of this factory.

to 2. the butterfly crest : from 1, come back on the same road, leave the baseball ground on your right, then turn left at three intersections. You should face a sort of military camp between two branches of the road. Turn right to ride along the wall of the camp. One kilometer later, the small road turns into a dirt road.

One the way back, if you are not tired enough, try the other branch along the camp. It goes down to Jungkeng St., (中坑街) from where you can easily ride up to join 1.
